Merging bookmark toolbar folders in Firefox
First let me start with a little background. i've been a Mosaic/Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox user from the beginning (say 1995 or so). So i have a long list of legacy bookmarks to contend with. i've also moved these around and merged them with other lists as i moved from machine to machine and browser to browser. i decided to download the Foxmarks extension the other day to try and consolidate the bookmarks from my laptop and desktop into one manageable list. i'm also going to evaluate Google's browser sync for Firefox and i'll provide a report on the two sometime in the future, but back to the story.
i started the initial merge of the bookmarks, Foxmarks asked me if i wanted to pick a primary list. i chose the list from my laptop. The merge went very smoothly, however i noticed the bookmarks toolbar was the list from my desktop machine. No big deal since that is my primary machine at the moment. That was about a week ago. Today i started the big clean up. Things went pretty quickly until i got to the point where i had a "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" (bookmarks) and "Personal Toolbar Folder" (personal). The bookmarks folder had all my toolbar links from the my laptop. The personal folder had all the links from my desktop. i did some research and found that the current standard in Firefox is for the folder to be called "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder", so i started moving everything over to that folder. Once the personal folder was empty, i tried to delete it. Delete was disabled. i checked the folder's properties, nothing. Hmmm.... i did some searching and finally found this (hint: look on the Edit menu of Bookmarks Manager). Per the article, i set my bookmarks folder to my newly consolidated bookmarks folder. Once that was set, my new bookmarks showed up in the toolbar and i was able to delete the personal folder. All is well in Firefoxland.
